# LED Face Mask vs Red Light Panel: Which Format Fits Your Routine?

> A mask is worn on the face; a panel needs its own position and working distance. Compare those practical differences before judging either by LED count or power.

An LED face mask is a wearable format shaped around the face. A red light panel is a separate device positioned on a stand or mount. Choose between them by the exact device's intended use, fit, setup and instructions. The format alone does not establish which produces better results.

NERV is developing both formats. This guide explains how to compare them; it is not a hands-on test or a claim that our upcoming products match another manufacturer's performance. Brand pages were checked on **29 October 2026**. The image above is a reference-based preview of the upcoming NERV Skin products, not final product photography.

## Compare the practical differences first

| Decision | LED face mask | Desktop red light panel |
|---|---|---|
| Physical arrangement | Worn over the face; shape and fit matter | Positioned separately; stand, angle and working distance matter |
| Space | Check storage size and any controller or cable | Check the panel, stand footprint, clearance and power cable |
| Coverage | Check which areas the exact mask is designed to cover | Ask for coverage at the specified distance, not just housing dimensions |
| Routine | Check the manual's preparation, duration and cleaning steps | Check positioning as well as preparation, duration and cleaning |
| Power | Verify rechargeable, corded or other arrangement | Verify the supplied power arrangement and plug |
| Evidence | Look for documentation for that model and intended purpose | Use the same standard; a larger array does not establish better outcomes |

These are buying criteria, not specifications shared by every product. Some masks use a separate controller; panels vary substantially in size and mounting options. Confirm the exact version in the listing and manual.

## A face mask puts fit at the centre of the decision

Check how the mask is held in place, its dimensions or fit guidance, its contact materials and whether the seller explains cleaning. A flexible mask and a sculpted shell are different designs; neither label tells you whether the product will fit you comfortably.

The eye area deserves its own check. An opening, insert or shade in a photograph is not enough to determine the protection required. Use the instructions for that device. For example, [Omnilux's product information](https://omniluxled.com/products/omnilux-contour-face) provides model-specific guidance about eye protection and skincare, alongside its technical details. That guidance belongs to its own device and cannot be copied to another mask.

Before buying, find out how the mask is powered and operated. A promotional image may hide a cable or controller. Ask whether the product works independently of a phone, what charging equipment is supplied and whether the full instructions are available to read before purchase.

## A desktop panel puts positioning at the centre of the decision

Measure the available surface and consider where the cable will run. Check whether the stand is included, how it holds the panel and what clearance the manual requires. A panel described as desktop or tabletop is not automatically suitable for every shelf or bedside table.

Separate the physical dimensions from the illuminated coverage at the intended distance. A 41 × 22.5 cm housing does not establish a 41 × 22.5 cm usable treatment area. Ask how the manufacturer measured coverage and output, including the distance and operating mode.

For a closer look at these numbers, use our [red light panel buying guide](/au/journal/red-light-panel-buying-guide). It explains why an irradiance figure without a measurement distance is incomplete and why electrical watts cannot be treated as light reaching the skin.

## Compare specifications without declaring a winner from one number

Wavelengths, LED count, electrical power and irradiance describe different aspects of a device. A larger number in one column does not settle the buying decision. A useful comparison records what was measured, how it was measured and whether the conditions match.

Also check the model generation. [CurrentBody Australia's mask page](https://www.currentbody.com.au/products/currentbody-skin-led-light-therapy-mask) currently presents Series 3, while Series 2 remains a separate option. Reviews or tables for an older generation may describe a different configuration from the product available now.

Use a short comparison sheet for each model:

- Exact name and generation, including whether the page is a preview or an active offer.
- Intended purpose, supported by that model's documentation.
- Wavelengths and any mode controls that the manual actually describes.
- Fit or setup requirements, supplied accessories and power arrangement.
- Output measurements with distance, measurement method and operating conditions.
- Total Australian purchase cost, delivery terms, returns and warranty details.

## Keep safety and expectations specific to the device

The [American Academy of Dermatology](https://www.aad.org/public/cosmetic/safety/red-light-therapy) advises following the device's directions and using the eye protection those directions specify. It also recommends discussing suitability with a dermatologist, particularly where a skin condition or medication could increase light sensitivity. These are reasons to read the manual before buying, rather than borrow a routine from a different mask or panel.

We do not recommend a universal session duration, working distance or schedule in this comparison. Nor does choosing a mask, a panel or both guarantee a particular skin outcome.

## Where the upcoming NERV products fit

The [NERV LED Face Mask](/au/products/nerv-led-face-mask) preview shows a sculpted black wearable design. Its wavelengths, LED count, power, controls, charging arrangement and accessories are still unconfirmed. The picture cannot answer those questions, and we are not carrying specifications over from a different mask.

The [NERV Red Light Panel](/au/products/nerv-red-light-panel) is the RLB10 desktop format. The supplied sheet lists 120 LEDs, 37 W power and a 41 × 22.5 cm panel. Its wavelength line reads 850 + 660 + 850 nm; the repeated value does not create a third distinct wavelength. The supplier's 56–122 mW/cm² irradiance range lacks a measurement distance, so it is not a basis for comparing clinical performance or calculating sessions.

Both products are previews with orders and pre-orders closed. Prices and launch timing are unannounced. The [Skin collection](/au/skin) links to each product's current details and launch-update list.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is a red light panel better than an LED mask?**
The format alone cannot answer that. Compare the documented purpose, fit or positioning, instructions and evidence for the exact devices. A panel may suit the space you have, while a mask may suit the wearable format you prefer.

**Can I use a face mask elsewhere on my body?**
Do not assume that a face-specific product can be repositioned for other areas. Check its manual and intended use. Similarly, a desktop panel's size does not establish whole-body coverage.

**Do I need both a mask and a panel?**
No. Start with your requirements and whether one documented device addresses them. A bundle is a purchasing option, not evidence that combining devices improves results.

**Can I use the same session time for a mask and a panel?**
Use each manufacturer's instructions. The distance, output, coverage and operating mode may differ, so a schedule for one device should not be transferred to another.

**What should I ask about a product that has not launched yet?**
Ask for the final manual, specification sheet, package list and purchase terms. A launch-update signup should be clearly distinguished from a paid pre-order.
