# 3D vs Flat Sleep Masks: How to Choose the Shape and Fit

> 3D describes a sleep mask’s shape; silk describes its material. Compare both, then check the fit around your eyes, nose and pillow.

A **3D sleep mask** has a shaped front that creates space around the eyes. A **flat sleep mask** has a simpler profile that sits closer to the face. Either can be made from different fabrics. The choice comes down to eye clearance, the way the mask meets your face and how its strap and edges feel in your usual resting position.

We are developing the NERV Sleep Mask, so this is a commercially interested buying guide. It explains design choices using published product information, not a hands-on ranking of competing masks. Brand pages were checked on **29 October 2026**. The NERV mask is coming soon; orders and pre-orders are closed.

## Compare shape and fabric separately

The phrases 3D mask and silk mask answer different questions. A silk mask can be contoured, and a contoured mask can use synthetic materials. A product photo or the word soft will not tell you the full material composition.

| Decision | Flat profile | Contoured or 3D profile |
|---|---|---|
| Space around the eyes | Usually less sculpted space; check the actual design | Shaped recesses create eye space; depth varies |
| Contact with a pillow | Check the strap and front in your normal position | Check whether the edges or cups press into the pillow |
| Material | Read the outer fabric, lining and filling separately | Read the same details; 3D does not mean silk |
| Light shading | Depends on coverage and the fit around the edges | Also depends on coverage and fit; contours alone do not guarantee blackout |
| Adjustment | Check whether the fastening can be adjusted | Check the fastening and whether the eye area is fixed or adjustable |

These are design questions rather than a verdict that one shape is better. Two contoured masks can feel quite different if their eye areas, temple thickness or straps differ.

## Four things to check before choosing

### Eye clearance

Look for a clear view of the inside of the mask. A shaped front may create room around your eyes, but the useful space depends on its depth and your face. If eyelash extensions are your main concern, look for an explicit manufacturer statement and its qualifications. The word contoured does not guarantee clearance for every lash length.

### Light gaps around the nose and cheeks

Check how the lower edge follows the nose and face. A claim of full blackout is stronger than a description of light shading. Decide whether you need that specific promise, then check how the manufacturer explains fit and returns. Avoid assuming that a thicker mask or a darker colour settles the question.

### Strap and pillow contact

An adjustable fastening lets you change the fit; it does not tell you the minimum or maximum head size. Check published dimensions if available. For side sleeping, inspect the material at the temples and the position of the fastening. A face-on product image does not show how the mask sits between your head and a pillow.

### Materials and care

Read the full composition, including any foam or filling. Follow the care instructions for that exact model. A washing instruction for one brand is not a reliable instruction for another mask with a different fabric, lining or structure. If the listing does not provide the information you need, resolve it before purchasing.

## What current Australian brand pages show

Different product descriptions emphasise different decisions. These examples help you read a listing; they are not a performance league table.

| Product | What its published description highlights | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| [Earjobs Dozy](https://www.earjobs.com.au/products/dozy-sleep-mask) | Moveable eye cups, an adjustable strap and a published care guide | Which parts adjust and what the included kit contains |
| [Manta PRO](https://mantasleep.com.au/products/manta-sleep-mask-pro) | C-shaped cups, adjustable positioning and a side-sleeping design | Eye-cup shape, temple contact and the brand’s stated blackout claim |
| [Slip Black Contour](https://slip.com.au/products/sleep-mask-contour) | Silk fabric and shaped space for eyelashes, with a qualification that suitability varies | Fabric composition and clearance for your own lashes |
| [NERV Sleep Mask](/au/products/nerv-sleep-mask) | Hollowed 3D contours, adjustable wraparound fastening and light shading | Polyester, polyurethane and spandex; no complete-blackout or side-sleeping guarantee |

The competitor features above are manufacturer descriptions. We have not tested them against one another. NERV’s dimensions, weight and care instructions have not yet been published, so those should be checked when the final launch information is available.

## A practical choice for your routine

If your current mask rests against your eyes and you dislike the feeling, a contoured shape is a sensible design to investigate. If you prefer a simpler front, start with flat designs and compare the fabric and strap. If a particular material matters most to you, filter by material first, then decide on shape.

For travel, check the packed size and care instructions instead of assuming that a mask will fold without affecting its shape. For side sleeping, prioritise documented fit details over a generic comfort slogan. For complete darkness, ask whether the product promises full blackout and how that depends on fit.

The [NERV mask preview](/au/products/nerv-sleep-mask) sets out the current facts and launch status. The [Dreamstate bundle](/au/products/nerv-dreamstate-sleep-bundle) pairs it with earbuds for a wind-down routine. A sleep mask handles light; it does not answer the separate question of noise. Our [ENC vs ANC earbud guide](/au/journal/enc-vs-anc-earbuds) explains those terms.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is a 3D sleep mask always better than a flat one?**
No. A shaped eye area can be useful if you want more clearance, but your preference also depends on fabric, strap position and pillow contact. Choose the features you need rather than treating 3D as a quality score.

**Are contoured sleep masks made from silk?**
Some are and some are not. Contoured describes the shape. Read the material list to find out whether the fabric, lining or filling uses silk or another material.

**Does a 3D mask guarantee zero pressure on the eyes?**
No. A hollowed shape describes the construction, not the experience of every wearer. Fit, eye-area depth and fastening tension all matter.

**Can I use another brand’s washing instructions?**
Use the instructions for your specific mask. Fabric and internal construction vary, so another model’s machine-washable claim is not transferable.

**What should I check when the NERV mask launches?**
Check the final dimensions, care instructions, price, delivery information and applicable return terms alongside the published design and material details. Those facts will make the purchase decision more useful than a broad best-mask claim.
